Message from Deborah

Greetings Wayland Middle School Caregivers,

This week’s message honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the work that we are doing at WMS to create a community where all belong, are seen, and are free from acts of harm.

Nonviolence as a way of life.
Nonviolence chooses love instead of hate.
Nonviolence believes that the universe is on the side of justice.
Nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice, not people.
Nonviolence holds that suffering can educate and transform.
Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people.
Nonviolence seeks to win friendship and understanding.

Many thanks to Ms. Dirmeikis for creating the WMS Pop-Up Exhibit: The Idea of a Beloved Community. Please stop by the exhibit to read one of the many texts related to the Civil Rights Movement and Dr. King’s leadership, to match provided visuals to Dr. King’s principles of non-violence, and to take a moment for peaceful reflection. The exhibit is located in the hallway adjacent to the library and opposite the courtyard.

At the Wayland METCO Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Monday, January 19th, our middle school students demonstrated their commitment to Dr. King’s message through their speeches, instruction, and music. We celebrate eighth graders Caleb Hammond, Whitney Zylich, Georgette Isahagian, Jayani Norris, Manal Siidi, Penelope Fishburn, and Selin Yardibi for their inspiring speeches about Embrace heroes Embrace Boston Heroes. Thanks to eighth graders Kaleb Nigus and King Graham who presented “MLK by the Numbers”, we were reminded of Dr. King’s sacrifices and timeless impact. We are grateful for the collaborative musical performance of seventh graders Abigail Ahodokpo, Kinverlie Boval, Annaelle Charles, and staff member Marnie Hall. This Friday, at WMS, our students in grades 6, 7, and 8 will have an opportunity to celebrate 8th grade house mentor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in our annual school-based celebration.

In the words of Dr. King, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that”. At WMS, our doors are always open. Whether you have questions, concerns, or simply want to share in the excitement of the school year or talk about where our school needs to go, we encourage you to reach out.

Deborah, Courtney, and Rebecca

Executive Function at Home

On December 10th, Wayland Middle School staff members joined Wayland High School staff members for Part I of a two-part series on Executive Functioning facilitated by Ms. Sarah Ward, an internationally recognized expert on executive function skills.

In the professional development, we learned the importance of developing our students’ ability to make a mental image of what a task looks like when done and to do future thinking related to “what do I look like doing this task” in space and time.

This week’s executive function strategy can support homework completion at home.

  • Ask your child to verbally walk you through what they have for homework instead of reading your child’s planner yourself. Asking the following question can help your child mentally envision themself doing the task:
  • What does it look like when you’re ____________?
  • What do you look like?
  • What will it look like when you are done?

  • Turn the homework description into a role for your child
  • a summarizer (for example, when doing independent reading)
  • an evidence finder (for example, when analyzing a primary source in social studies)
  • a data analyst (for example, when creating a claim based on data in science)
  • a problem solver (for example, when doing math problems)

Report Cards for Semester One

Because it is critical for you, our middle school caregivers, to know how your child(ren) are doing in school, and there continues to be a PowerSchool learning curve, we will provide paper report cards to students this year.

On Wednesday, January 28th, students will receive a report card printout to bring home. It will include a cover sheet that caregivers are asked to sign after reviewing the report card with their child. Students should return their cover sheet by Friday, January 30th to their homeroom teachers.  Grades will also be available to families through the PowerSchool portal starting on Monday, January 26th.

Portrait(s) of a Learner: Opportunities for Participation

Please see the following message and opportunities for parents and caregivers shared by Superintendent David Fleishman in his January Update.

“As we ponder the future of education in Wayland, AI and future technological advances that we are not yet aware of will likely have a major impact on the futures of our students. As a result, we think it is an opportune time to engage in a district and community-wide Portrait(s) of a Learner exercise to determine the most important skills, knowledge, and experiences students need for learning and success beyond school. We hope that it will help us sharpen our focus around what students most need and provide a blueprint for our strategy to prepare them for the changing realities of the world.”

Parent and Caregiver Focus Group

The Focus Group will take place on Thursday, January 22nd at 7:00PM - Virtual.

“Parents and caregivers will share insights about student growth, challenges, and the experiences that matter most across K-12. We’ll explore what skills and mindsets students need today and what supports truly make a difference. This feedback will guide the development of Portrait(s) traits and learner profiles. If you are interested please fill out this Google form.”

Big Group Visioning Series

The three-part series will bring together educators, parents and community members to co-create Wayland’s Portrait(s) of a Learner. Below is a calendar of the process/meetings.

  • Session 1: Monday, February 9, 4:00-6:00 pm

Identify 4-6 core draft traits based on a series of focus groups with students, recent graduates, and parents/caregivers

  • Session 2: Monday, March 9, 4:00-6:00

Build narrative learner archetypes that reflect the range of Wayland learners

  • Session 3: Monday, March 30th- 4:00-5:00

Revise and finalize the Portrait(s) as we prepare to launch.

Participants are required to attend all three sessions as each session builds on the previous one. Please click on the button below to fill out the Google Form here if you are interested in participating.”
