WHAT'S HAPPENING!

The 7th grade Life Scientists at Wayland Middle School have completed an exciting project while learning about their local ecosystem in an authentic manner. Students worked outside of the classroom in the woods for 2 weeks, studying their environment. A key component of this study was to identify and catalog the organisms that are present in the Wayland woods. This Field Guide is the culminating piece that students created. In this guide you will find flora and fauna that are present in Wayland, Massachusetts. Many of the photographs are taken by students. Students researched information about the physical characteristics, habitat and adaptations of the organism they found. Finally, they sketched the organism to include an artistic portrayal of each. This guide was completed by all 7thgrade Life Scientists with the help of their teachers, Kathy Hawkins and Jill Darling.

MISSION STATEMENT

Wayland Middle School is a community of learners. We strive to provide a rigorous, stimulating academic environment in which students find both challenge and support. We nurture a sense of curiosity, connection, and love of learning that extends beyond the middle school years. With equal regard, we support the development of social skills by encouraging a fundamental respect for oneself, our environment, and the larger world. Our house mentors - Henry David Thoreau, Rachel Louise Carson, and Martin Luther King, Jr. – model for us individual and collective responsibility and our role in fostering justice. We promote their teachings as we care for every member of our community.
